Are You Being Conned, about Smile Design

Smile Design is an excellent choice in the realm of cosmetic dentistry, yet almost every dental practice claims to offer it.

But do they really?

In recent years, dentistry has evolved significantly, and many patients are now on the lookout for dentists who specialize in Smile Design. Consequently, it seems that nearly every dental clinic is offering some form of Smile Design or Digital Smile Design. However, don’t be misled by the term “smile design” as it might not reflect the true nature of the service provided.

It’s crucial to remember: Most Smile Design software merely presents an image of what’s possible, not the exact outcome of what will be created.

These so-called Smile Design programs are readily available to all dental clinics as online applications that cost a few hundred pounds, leading to the proliferation of this service across clinics. There are also mobile apps that allow individuals to become Smile Design Technicians after just 10 minutes of online training, but you must realize that this doesn’t make you a licensed dental technician. Nowadays, you can even create a smile design at home using your smartphone with a filter to enhance your eyebrows or apply false lashes!

However, a digital image on a screen doesn’t suffice. It does not equate to an official Dental Smile Design.

Low-cost Smile Design software is accessible to everyone and can be utilized for free. The results may not resemble what is depicted on-screen unless the Smile Design technology is linked to an in-clinic milling machine. If a clinic utilizes Smile Design without having the necessary CAD/CAM milling machine, the image may be sent to an external lab, where a dental technician tries to replicate the tooth shape by hand. Essentially, the final product you receive will likely differ from what you accepted in your Smile Design program.

Simply put, if there’s no technology in the clinic to produce dental crowns or veneers, there’s no genuine Smile Design!

Smile Design or Digital Smile Design is frequently used as a marketing tool by many dental websites to attract more patients. Be cautious of paying extra for crowns or veneers labeled ‘Smile Design’ when you could get standard crowns or veneers made by an external lab.

It’s important to ask the right questions before scheduling an appointment.

The first thing to confirm is whether the dental clinic has an in-house lab and a CAD/CAM milling machine. True Smile Design technology allows dental technicians to craft the perfect tooth shape based on your gum line and arch, ensuring that the results align with your preferences and that the bite fits your jaw’s contours. Once the design phase concludes, you can watch as the teeth are milled on-site. A single restoration can be produced in less than 10 minutes using this technology, which represents a substantial investment in high-quality care.

There is only one leading company providing authentic Smile Design technology—Dentsply Sirona.

Our “VIP” facility in Marmaris is equipped with Sirona technology:

Sirona offers virtual 3D smile design in the lab using CAD. Whether you require crowns, veneers, inlays, onlays, or bridges, you can choose what you want to create.

The Sirona Eos X5 scanner allows for dental scans with an accuracy of 0.0021 millimeters… It doesn’t get more precise than that!

Our Sirona inLab MC 2 XL CAD/CAM milling machines enable us to mill and cut CEREC and e.max restorations directly in the clinic based on computer designs.

Using the computer-generated design, the Sirona inLab MCX5 milling machine allows us to mill or cut zirconium restorations right in-house.

We utilize the Sirona HTC speed furnace for baking the finished restorations.

The Sirona Smile Design and CEREC CAD/CAM technology at our “VIP” Marmaris clinic represent the world’s premier Smile Design system, and we are committed to providing our patients with the highest standard of care while delivering on our promises.

In summary: Marmaris Dental Center delivers authentic Smile Design.

While most dental clinics now offer CEREC or e.max veneers and crowns, the preparation for these differs from conventional materials (Metal Ceramic or Zirconium). Thus, the cosmetic dentist must be skilled in preparing teeth for CEREC and e.max restorations. These restorations should be designed using official Smile Design software in conjunction with an in-clinic milling machine or CAM to ensure optimal results. You shouldn’t have to pay extra for CEREC or e.max restorations made by an outside laboratory. At our Marmaris clinic, we provide this Smile Design procedure if you opt for CEREC or e.max restorations, and in some cases, zirconium. New restorations are created based on your preferences for tooth shape and requirements from your dentist, with the final design wirelessly transmitted to the Sirona CNC/CAM equipment for precise milling.

In Turkey, a dental practice must have an on-site lab and be classified as a Centre, not just a typical dental clinic or polyclinic. Obtaining a license for this is complex and requires numerous inspections before certification can be granted. Make sure to ask whether you’re visiting an ordinary polyclinic or a center. If the clinic you visit isn’t one of the centers, be aware that they don’t have the license to operate an on-site lab. What benefits does Smile Design by Sirona offer?

What questions should you pose to a dentist who claims to offer Smile Design?

Does your clinic have an on-site laboratory? If so, how many dental technicians work there, and what kind of experience and education do they have?

Can you show me the Sirona CEREC CAD or CAM milling machines in action while my teeth are being milled?

Can you use the inLab MCXL to create our zirconium restorations at your facility?

If not, you’re not receiving true Smile Design… Just a computer-generated image that can never become reality.
